Window Blinds Myths

Some common misconceptions about blinds may be stopping you from considering them for your home. We are here to reassure you that blinds are always a solid choice for window treatments. We’ve debunked a few of the most prevalent myths to restore your peace of mind.

Myth 1: They’re Difficult to Clean

Blinds are generally very easy to maintain. You can wipe your blinds with a soft cloth or feather duster when you do your regular house cleaning. You can use wood oil on natural wood but take care to not cause moisture damage. Tilt the slats upward, start from the top and work your way down. Tilt the slats downward, repeat the process, and you’re done!

Myth 2: Blinds and Kids Don’t Mix

The danger of a young child or pet becoming entangled in cords is very real. Fortunately, many of today’s blinds offer cord lock or cordless options for a safer window treatment. You can also get motorized blinds to combine convenience and safety.

Which Material is Best?

Blinds are available in different materials and can suit any style of decor and lifestyle.

Authentic Wood

Natural wood brings warmth and character to a room in a way that no other window treatment can. Today’s top manufacturers use sustainable forestry and harvesting methods to ensure no environmental harm occurs. Heartland Woods Wood Blinds from Lafayette Interior Fashions are available in more than 65 paint and stain colors to complement any decor. Natural wood blinds from Alta are made using wood specifically chosen for its insulating properties to help you save on utility costs.

Authentic wood blends seamlessly with decor ranging from traditional to contemporary and everything in between. The only drawback to natural wood is it can be damaged by exposure to moisture and humidity, so keep that in mind when choosing a room for these blinds.

Faux Wood

Faux wood is the perfect blend of fashion and function. You get the look of genuine wood without the price tag or the upkeep. Faux wood is resistant to heat, humidity, and moisture which makes them great for bathrooms and sunrooms. Alta Window Fashions and Lafayette Interior Fashions offer faux wood blinds in an extensive variety of stain colors to mimic natural wood.

More to Consider

We want you to be 100% satisfied with your new blinds, so we have put together a list of things to consider prior to purchasing.

Color

Seeing samples of different materials is essential. Hold the sample next to, and in front of, the window at different times of day, as the time of day will affect the appearance of the blinds. When it comes to deciding between light or dark shades know that dark shades tend to show less dust and other marks making them ideal for high-traffic areas. Rooms with many windows, or very large windows, tend to perform better with lighter shades. Lighter colors will make your room feel open and airy even when the blinds are closed.

Slat Width and Direction

Gone are the days of blinds with a single slat size. The majority of blinds today are available in at least two slat sizes. Wider width slats are great for making a visual statement, increasing privacy, and view-through. Smaller slats look stunning on small windows but will decrease view-through substantially. Privacy is also reduced as you will need to tilt the slats farther in order to increase natural light in the room.

Mount Position

If you’ve shopped for window treatments in the past, you’ve likely heard the terms “inside mount” and “outside mount.” This refers to whether the window coverings are mounted inside the window frame or outside. Inside mounts offer a clean, streamlined look. Small windows or windows with shallow mounting depths are ideal for this type of mount. You will have small gaps at the sides due to space required for hardware, but if you have decorative windows you want to show off, it will all work out.

Outside mounts hang outside the frame completely. You are afforded more flexibility with decorative accents, like valances, as there is not a size constraint. The more open space also allows you to choose larger blinds for more coverage and privacy.

Energy Efficiency

All blinds will provide some insulation when fully closed. Genuine wood has the most natural insulating properties if you are looking to maximize your energy savings. Choose a wider slat, as fewer slats mean fewer gaps for air to come in.

Cost

Cost is a major factor when making a sizable purchase for your home. The cost will depend primarily on the material used, and the size and number of windows being dressed. Metal blinds tend to be the least costly while natural wood has a higher price tag, but we are committed to helping you find the blinds of your dreams that also fit your budget.
